Olympic Digressions Pt. 3
Yusuf Dikec, minimal is the new cool
Among the sensations of the Olympics, one marksman stood out. Yusuf Dikec, age: Dad, set the internet alight with his extremely relaxed demeanour. He shot in simple clothes, with nothing more than office glasses and earplugs. Dikec won the silver medal, hand in pocket, and social media didn't wait long to link the champion to an undercover killer. In an interview with Turkish television, he admitted that his minimalist style was very unusual and surprised even the jury. Yusuf's example is isolated, but it tells a different story about specialist equipment. Especially as athletes in precision sports rely more and more on additional gear.
This is also true of the outdoors, where you can often see hiking gear that would put a dentist's office to shame. To be honest, we don't know whether the explosion of outdoor goodies is an attempt to recreate the comfort of home, or a search for some form of immunity. We dare to ask the question, at the risk of being considered uncultured: is all this really necessary? And at what point does the outfit overpower the person? That is why we see no point in membranes that boast an inordinate number of water columns. Sure, staying dry is essential for comfort, but it should never interfere with the far more important task of breathing. And that of trusting one's own ability to cope with disturbances.
Yusuf Dikec, even if he is an exception to the rule, takes us to a place where human ability is central. He allows his performance to be judged with the most direct openness, taking the full risk of failure. It is a necessary demonstration of trust in a world where doubt has become the norm.
